VISITING DR. PAUL FLEISS IS LIKE GOING HOME

When you walk up the pathway of Dr. Paul Fleiss’s office, the converted craftsman cottage on Hillhurst, it was like going home. Warm, comfortable, pictures of his children from ceiling to floor. Listening to him talk about mother and child was like hearing a tribal elder impart the wisdom of the world. Nothing short of inspiring.

Our family has a very special connection with Dr Fleiss I was his patient. My mother would tell the story of when Me and my twin sister were born at Hollywood Presbyterian. Dec. 17th 1969, I was 1/2 my sisters birth weight and had to stay in an incubator. Dr. Fliess would come to see me in the hospital every day. She would talk about how her taught her how to make almond milk by hand and home made baby food.

When I became a Vegan in the 1990′s as a 20 something year old my mother would always comment about how I was a Dr. Fleiss baby and she was sure that had something to do with it. I would see him at the Hollywood Farmers Market and talk to him about how inspiring his life was to me.

Fast forward to Dec. 24th 2006, 39 years to the week of my birth. I am in the hospital after emergency C-section my new born daughter is having difficulty breast feeding the nurses are no help and immediatly put her on formula. My mom says “I think Dr. Fleiss is still seeing babies” she calls his office and he gets right on the phone tells my mom exactly what to do to get me out of the hospital and too his office to get my baby breast feeding. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE DID.

With in 20 minutes in his office he had my girl breast feeding, 2nd generation Fleiss baby! … And a vegan baby at that. He told us exactly what to do to take care of her and just like my mom a he reaction before Almond Milk and home made baby food.

On a side note my partner and father of my daughter was Bar Mitzvahed with Dr. Fleiss’s son Jason. He had not been Bar Mitzvahed at 13 but at 17 wanted to Dr. Fleiss arranged for him to study and have his ceremony with his Jason. The generosity of this man is beyond words. When our daughter became his patient Dr. Fleiss remembered every detail of the Bar Mitvah. The last time we visited with him in the homey Hillhurst office he said ” I found the video tape of the Bar Mitvah some day if you remind me I will bring it for you to see”

Going to Dr. Fleiss’s office truly is like going home.
