Nicole,

Just a little food for thought...I have always found it curious when I hear someone who has had their child at home with them discussing their concerns about sending the child to school without vaccines. These same people take their children with them to church, participate in a Mother's Day Out, take them to the grocery, take them to their local pharmacy/drugstore, to the park, to the mall and play on the soft toy climbing area...but are concerned about their immune system in regards to school. Why? They've been exposed to thousands of people and all the families and contacts of those thousands of families that each of those people are part of. Why the concern suddenly for exposure?

Now the flipside of this thinking I experienced with my own daughter. She came down with chickenpox the week after several of the children had gotten their vax. The sloughing from other children vaccinated recently that she was now around in Kindergarten was the way that she got it. We weathered it, kept her comfortable painting dots of pink that entertained her and stopped the itching, and it was fine. Yes, I fought the annoyance with having take off work and leave MY classrooms with a substitute to stay home with her, but it was a mild annoyance. Really just an appreciation of what the decision requires when parents are struggling with these very important decisions.

It's a flipsided decision. It's not a right or a wrong. It's a which side do you feel most comfortable on kind of decision. You're doing the right thing. You're doing it carefully, asking for opinions and things that need to be thought about in the process of making a very, very, VERY important decision in the life of YOUR child. And that's what it comes down to. YOUR CHILD. We trust that if you care enough to discuss it with others, you care enough about it to allow yourself to put your education and heart together to find the right answer.

You can do it. you ARE doing it. Now. Confidently. RIDE ON!!! You can do it!

Hi Dr. Gordon,

Thanks for the information on vaccines for entering public school. My eight year old daughter attends a private school, but we have been considering a change to our public school and my biggest concern is the number of vaccines that she would need! She has had just a few. After reading your information i will not be bullied into the MMR.

Most Kindly,
